Atlantic City is a city in Atlantic County, New Jersey, United States, and an internationally renowned resort city for gambling, conventions, and leisure. Atlantic City is located on Absecon Island on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean.
 
The Atlantic City Boardwalk was the first boardwalk in the United States, having opened on June 26, 1870. Casino/hotels front the boardwalk, as well as retail stores, restaurants, and amusements. Notable attractions include the Boardwalk Hall, House of Blues, and Ripley's Believe It or Not! museum. Atlantic City has many different shopping districts and malls, many of which are located inside or adjacent to the casino resorts. Major shopping malls are also located in and around Atlantic City. Ever since Atlantic City's growth as a resort town, numerous attractions and tourist traps have originated in the city. The Absecon Light is a coastal lighthouse located at the north end of Atlantic City overlooking Absecon Inlet. It is the tallest lighthouse in the state of New Jersey.
 
The Atlantic City School District serves students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. Nearby college campuses include those of Atlantic Cape Community College and Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, the latter of which offers classes and resources in the city, such as the Carnegie Library Center.
